‘Bang!’ Down goes the silent gavel.

A cross section of justices of the Ugandan supreme court in session.

Once referred to as the temple of Justice by then principle judge, Hon. Justice Ogola, the courts of law in Uganda continue to find themselves in at logger heads with the public that perceives them and the officers to be conduits of injustice and the hallmark of corruption. Just would have been the spirit in which a bottle was hurled at a sitting magistrate moments after passing sentence on a convict known to be a government critic. While many have added their voices to the chief justice’s condemnation of the way the public conducted and expressed their dissatisfaction; we take a look at the events that led to the fateful incident, as well as all the circumstances surrounding the public dissatisfaction. In a series of articles that follow hereon, our contributors take a swipe at  what the Chief Justice believes to be the sanctity of the judicial officers and the courts of the law, on the one hand and the public’s confidence of the in the courts of law. Citing corruption, delayed determination of cases, excessive interference of the judiciary by the executive, among others, our contributors deliver on an in-depth analysis of the future of the court adjudicated disputes.
